10th Graders Learn About Local Underground Railroad History and the Quaker Involvement

Adrian Burston, a former Friends teacher and Vice President of the Kennett Underground Railroad Center, and his wife Debbie Burston, recently presented to 10th grade American History classes about the local history of the Underground Railroad and the involvement of Quakers in the local abolition movement.
The presentation focused on the importance of individuals like William Still and Thomas Garrett, the vibrant Black communities in Pocopson, Chester County, and Kennett Square, and the significance of the Longwood Progressive Friends Meeting. This built on the first few units of the American History course's curriculum that focused on American slavery, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and the Civil War. Students listened to fascinating stories and had the opportunity to ask questions about the intricacies of the Underground Railroad and abolition movement.
