First Grade Butterfly Migration

First grade students recently gathered for the annual monarch butterfly migration, a beloved lower school tradition which connects science, Spanish, and art classes.
In science, students explored the life cycle of the butterfly, from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, a butterfly ready to migrate. They learned that monarch butterflies travel from Delaware to Mexico, where the process begins again! In Spanish, students discovered the cultural significance of the monarch butterfly during Día de Muertos, a holiday where the butterflies symbolize the souls of loved ones returning. Art class helped the students learn about symmetry while designing their own symmetrical monarch wings to wear during the migration. The migration is a meaningful and exciting tradition for both students and teachers!
